Seametrix, the Sea Routes API that runs on our infrastructure
Seametrix gives software, shipping and logistics companies real-world sea distances and vessel routes between more than 30,000 ports and terminals, with a single call to its API. It serves large customers around the world. Apart from its website, everything else is our work, the application, the APIs, the systems, the servers and the cloud.

Seametrix calculates real-world nautical distances and routes for more than 30,000 locations worldwide. Seaports, river ports, marinas, oil terminals, bunker hubs, offshore installations and anchorage areas.
Its product is not a website. It is an API that others build into their own software, software vendors, mobile apps, ERP systems and logistics platforms. They use it to calculate distances, simulate routes, estimate freight costs and emissions, monitor fleets and match cargoes with vessels.
When your product is an API inside the systems of large customers, there is no such thing as a "small" outage. If the API does not answer, the customer's work stops.
What we do
The whole product behind the website, from the code to the servers, by one team.
The application
The routing engines that calculate every route the moment it is requested, on a detailed sea network instead of pre-calculated distance tables.
The APIs
REST endpoints with clean JSON and an API key. Port-to-port or coordinate-to-coordinate routes, with intermediate waypoints, and the full set of waypoints in every response.
The systems
Trial and production keys, usage metering in tokens (one token is one route from A to B) and access to every endpoint on every plan.
The cloud
Load balancing and location-based geo-routing of requests on every plan.
The servers
Unlimited plans run on dedicated infrastructure, for the customers with the highest request volumes.
New capabilities
Every new capability of the API is written, tested and shipped to production by us, on our own infrastructure.
Routes that are calculated, not looked up
Seametrix does not rely on pre-calculated port-distance tables. Every route is calculated on the fly, on a detailed sea-routing network built on nautical charts and satellite vessel-tracking data.
Routing at sea is harder than on land, because the possible combinations run into billions. The algorithms rule out areas early, based on vessel draft and navigational restrictions, so the answer comes back fast and is a route a ship can actually follow.
The two navigation methods, Great-Circle and Rhumbline, each have their own engine, their own dataset and their own algorithm.

The options shipping asks for
A ship does not always take the shortest route. The API knows that.
SECA avoidance
Routes that avoid sulphur emission control areas, whenever the customer asks for it.
Piracy avoidance
Routing around high-risk piracy areas.
On/Off passages
A choice for every canal and passage, whether the route may use it or not.
Indonesian ASL
Compliance with the Indonesian archipelagic sea lanes.
1,000+ routing points
Alternative points for the exceptions of real navigation. Any waypoint can become a routing point at calculation time.
Ports or coordinates
Start and end at a port or anywhere on the map, with as many waypoints as the voyage needs.
Infrastructure that can carry a guarantee
Seametrix backs every plan with a downtime money-back guarantee. You only make a promise like that when you trust the infrastructure underneath.
We design and run that infrastructure. Requests are spread across servers with load balancing and geo-routed, so every customer is served from a nearby node. The largest customers, on Unlimited plans, run on dedicated infrastructure.
Because the code and the servers sit with the same team, a new capability a customer asks for does not pass through three vendors. We write it, test it and ship it to production ourselves.
From enquiry to production
For a new Seametrix customer the process is simple, and behind it run systems we built.
- Enquiry. The company sends a request from a business email and describes what it needs.
- Trial key. It receives a trial API key and everything it needs to start integrating.
- Production. Once it signs the terms it gets its production key, and usage is metered in annual tokens it can scale up at any time.
Every Seametrix plan includes support and integration advice.

The result
Seametrix sells accuracy and reliability to large customers around the world. Behind its API is one team that owns both the code and the infrastructure, from the routing engines to the keys, the usage metering, the load balancing and the dedicated servers.
This is the kind of work we do when a product cannot go down. If you are building a SaaS or an API too, see how we set up cloud infrastructure for SaaS and software and custom applications. Another project on infrastructure we run is the Ekdoseis Pigi case study.
