Fly FM 95.9 is a radio station in Rethymno, Crete. We built its website in custom code, turned it into an app that installs on the phone without an app store (PWA) and connected it to the station's live stream from StreamWithQ, our radio streaming business unit. We also look after its hosting and support.

The client

Fly FM 95.9 plays music for Rethymno every day, on 95.9 FM and live online. A local station today is not only heard in the car. People listen on their phones, on the office computer and from far away from Crete.

So the website had to be the station's online "studio". One place where you press play straight away, see what is on air, read the news and send your song request.

A player that never stops

The live player stays at the bottom of the screen. Listeners press play once and keep listening while they read the news or look up the contact details.

The "Now playing" section shows the song that is on air at that moment and updates itself, with no page reload.

An app without an app store

The site is a PWA. Listeners add it to their phone's home screen or to their computer, and from then on it opens like an app, with one tap. The station gets its own app without the cost and the approvals of the App Store and Google Play.

For anyone who does not know how, the website itself shows the two installation steps on the phone.

News and song requests

The news section carries stories about new releases and everything happening in Rethymno, with photos and video clips, and the three latest also appear on the homepage.

Song requests go straight to the studio through a simple form. If the station approves a request, it appears in the site's live requests. The details are deleted automatically after 90 days, to protect the listener's personal data. Listeners who prefer can send their request on Viber.

Streaming, hosting and support

The station's live stream comes from StreamWithQ, our radio streaming business unit, where more than 100 radio stations rely on us for their streaming every day. The website is hosted on our own infrastructure through Qbrains web hosting, and we also provide its technical support.

So the station has one partner for its whole online presence. If something does not play, nobody has to work out whether the server, the code or the stream is to blame.

The result

Fly FM 95.9 is on air today on 95.9 FM and online 24/7, with a website that works like an app, a player that never stops and song requests that reach the studio directly. Code, streaming, hosting and support all sit with the same team.
