NavAPI, six maritime APIs running on our infrastructure
NavAPI gives software, shipping and logistics companies AIS vessel positions, sea routes, weather, voyage metrics, geographic data and marine maps, all through APIs. We do the same work here that we do for Seametrix. Apart from the website, everything else is our work: the applications, the APIs, the systems, the servers and the cloud.
I want something similar →The client
NavAPI serves companies that build software for shipping and logistics. Its motto is "Purely APIs, nothing else". It does not sell an app for end users. It sells data and calculations that its clients put inside their own systems to plan, schedule, monitor and report every voyage.
The company is certified to ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 27001 for information security.
When six different APIs run inside clients' systems, the infrastructure has to answer every time, fast and with correct data. A wrong route or a delayed vessel position shows up at once in the client's software.
The six APIs
Each API solves one part of the voyage, and together they cover the whole cycle.
AIS Positions
Vessel positions worldwide with full AIS data, years of historical tracks, and vessel search by destination and ETA or by distance from a point.
Sea Routing
Real-world sea routes and distances, at sea and on inland waterways, between more than 20,000 ports and terminals or any coordinates.
Weather
Forecasts from NOAA models, updated every 6 hours, with 67 variables. Data for a single point or a whole area, plus astronomical data.
Voyage Metrics
For every voyage leg: fuel consumption, sea and port time, weather delays and CO₂e emissions, in one response.
Marine Geocoding
For any port or point: whether it lies in a SECA zone, which trade lane, time zone and Load Line zone it belongs to, and whether it is in a risk or piracy area.
Marine Maps
7 basemaps and 15 layers with ports, SECA and MARPOL zones, risk areas and seamarks. They work with Leaflet, Google Maps, OpenLayers and MapLibre.
What we do
The whole product behind the website, from the code to the servers, by one team.
The applications
The engines that calculate routes, combine vessel positions, weather and geographic data, and return the answer the moment it is requested.
The APIs
REST endpoints with clean JSON and an API key for all six products, with one way of calling them and documentation for the clients' developers.
The systems
Trial and production keys, usage metering in tokens for every endpoint, yearly plans, and upgrades that keep any unused tokens.
The cloud
Load balancing and geographic routing of requests, plus caching for the maps so that tiles load fast in every region.
The servers
The infrastructure that holds the data and runs the calculations for all the APIs, day and night.
New features
Every new API and every new endpoint is written, tested and released to production by us, on our own infrastructure.
From one API to six
For Seametrix we built an API that does one thing: sea routes. In NavAPI the same approach covers the whole voyage, before, during and after.
- Planning. Routes, distances and cost estimates before the voyage starts.
- Scheduling. Times, fuel, SECA zones and weather for every leg.
- Monitoring. Live vessel positions and search by destination.
- Reporting. Historical tracks and emissions for every voyage.
Every new API shares the same systems as the others: the keys, the usage metering and the infrastructure. A new product never starts from zero.

Infrastructure for data that never stops
Vessel positions change all the time and weather forecasts are refreshed every 6 hours. The infrastructure has to take in new data without slowing down the answers to clients.
We design and run that infrastructure. Requests are spread across many servers and routed geographically, and maps are served with caching.
Because the code and the servers sit with the same team, a new endpoint a client asks for does not pass through three vendors. We write it, test it and release it ourselves.
From trial to production
Onboarding a new NavAPI client is simple, and behind it run systems we built.
- Trial. The company gets trial access and starts integrating with the API documentation.
- Plan. It picks a yearly token plan for each API or an unlimited plan.
- Growth. It upgrades whenever it wants, and unused tokens are carried over pro rata.
For special needs, NavAPI also builds tailor-made APIs.

The result
NavAPI sells accuracy and reliability to software, shipping and logistics companies. Behind its six APIs is one team that owns both the code and the infrastructure, from the calculation engines to the keys, the usage metering, the load balancing and the servers.
This is the kind of work we do when a product cannot go down. If you are building a SaaS or an API too, see how we set up cloud infrastructure for SaaS and software and custom applications, or read the Seametrix case study.
